The West Indies will host England at Bridgetown for the opening test match of a 3 match series.
England enter this series with the team in good form. In their last series, England won against Sri Lanka away from home. The bowlers were exceptional for England as Jack Leach and Moeen Ali led the bowling unit. Both Ali and Leach took 18 wickets while averaging less than 25. The conditions are excepted to be very similar in the West Indies when compared to Sri Lanka which should give the English bowlers tons of confidence. As far as the English batting is concerned, both Jos Buttler and Ben Foakes led the team well in Sri Lanka as the pair contributed over 500 runs. Joe Root will hope to improve his form but considering how well the other batters played in Sri Lanka, England should be able to score enough runs.
On the other side of the coin, the biggest strength for the West Indies has been their bowling. In 2018, Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder combined to take 70 wickets and the pair will have to perform again if West Indies are to compete. As far as the batting is concerned, Shai Hope has been their best player in recent times and he will have to score the bulk of the runs to give the home team a chance. As far as the team is concerned, the West Indies are in poor form as they were beaten by Bangladesh in their last series.
The conditions in Bridgetown are expected to favour spin.
All in all, I am going to pick England to win this game. England have been firing on all cylinders while West Indies have really struggled over the past few months. West Indies don’t have a stable batting unit and I see the hosts struggling to play an inform England bowling unit. With a contrast in form for the two teams, I see England winning this match.
