Clayton Kershaw – Injury Update – Fantasy Baseball Impact – 6/1/18
Clayton Kershaw’s return to the Dodgers starting rotation only lasted for 5 innings last night as the Dodgers Ace just returned to the DL today due to a lower back strain.
Kershaw didn’t look like his dominant self against the Philadelphia Phillies last night as he allowed 4 hits, 1 ER, and struck out only four Phillies before leaving the game after the 5th inning.
It’s a frustrating trip to the DL for Dodgers fans and Kershaw Fantasy owners not only did he just come off the DL after about month due to a bicep injury, Kershaw mentioned that the back injury felt very similar to back issue he had last season that kept him out of action for about a month.
Obviously, Kershaw is not a player that you’re going to drop and hopefully you have DL spot available, but let’s take a look at some available starting pitching that is currently available based the ESPN Fantasy/Yahoo Fantasy percentages.
Caleb Smith – Miami Marlins (ESPN 34.9% / Yahoo 45%) – Caleb Smith has been outstanding in his first full season in the majors as although he is just 4-5 on the season, he currently has a 3.51 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Smith is solid replacement for Kershaw as he has the ability to pick up some strikeouts as he currently has a 11.0 K/9 ratio. Smith has given up 2 or less ER’s in 6 of his last 7 starts and I’m actually surprised he isn’t owned a bit more in leagues.
Mike Foltynewicz – Atlanta Braves (ESPN 66.7% / Yahoo 66%) – Mike Foltynewicz has a 4-3 record on the season and has been impressive as he currently is sporting a 2.55 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Foltynewicz has given up just 2 ER’s over his last 23.0 IP and similar to Caleb Smith, can help in the strikeout department as he currently has a 10.4 K/9 ratio.
Joe Musgrove – Pittsburgh Pirates (ESPN 28.3% / Yahoo 50%) – Joe Musgrove has looked good in both his starts this season and it’s hard to imagine he will keep it going, he might be worth a stash as Musgrove has gone 7 innings in both his starts and currently is sporting a 0.64 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. Musgrove doesn’t have the strikeout upside as Smith and Foltynewicz however, he still does have a respectable 8.0 K/9 ratio in his career.
