Update (6:42 PM) - Decided to throw a Pitt stack together as I think it's pretty solid value tonight and taking a chance with Griffin Canning who certainly has the stuff to give the Blue Jays (who are hitting just .224 vs. RHP) trouble. Image is updated below. Good Luck!
We have a huge 15-game MLB “Main” slate tonight that starts at 7:05 pm and let’s take a look at our “initial” FanDuel lineup!
We have a ton of solid options on the mound tonight, however, I’m looking to get some value out of the pitching spot tonight and think we have a nice option in Vince Velasquez of the Philadelphia Phillies who has a solid home match-up against the Detroit Tigers. Velasquez has looked outstanding in his 4 starts this season and comes into this matchup with an impressive 1.99 ERA & 1.01 WHIP. Velasquez has K-upside (14 K’s in his last 10.2 IP) and you have to like his chances to pile up some strikeouts tonight against the Detroit Tigers who rank 29th in team strikeout rate (10.15 K/game) and fanned 20 times against the White Sox the other night.
On the offensive side, we’ll start of with a mini stack of Boston Red Sox in J.D. Martinez & Xander Bogaerts in their match-up against the RHP Aaron Brooks of the Oakland Athletics. Brooks started off the season with a solid performance against Boston, however, it’s been downhill since than as he has allowed at least 3 ER’s in each of his last 4 starts and currently comes into this match-up with a 5.33 ERA while allowing RHB’s to post a .812 OPS against him.
J.D. Martinez came back after missing the weekend due to a sore back and in my opinion, has too much value to pass up on at just $4,000. Martinez is hitting .337 on the season and loves hitting at Fenway as last season, he posted an incredible .334 average/1.088 OPS at home.
Xander Bogaerts has been solid this season, hitting .279 with 4 HR’s & 16 RBI’s, and has collected hits in 7 of his last 8 games, including a 2 for 5 performance last night with 2 doubles & 2 RBI’s. Bogaerts has posted a .333 average/1.036 OPS at home this season and is 3 for 4 with 3 doubles against Brooks in his career.
We also have another mini-stack in the Cincinnati Reds as we’re going with Eugenio Suarez & Tucker Barnhart in their good match-up against the LHP Jason Vargas of the New York Mets. Vargas is coming off back-to-back solid starts, however, this is still the same pitcher who has a 7.20 ERA & 1.93 WHIP on the season and is allowing RHB’s to post a .300 average/.967 OPS against him.
Eugenio Suarez is hitting just .232 on the season, however, does have 6 HR’s on the year and has collected hits in 5 of his last 6 games. Suarez has been great against LHP’s over the past few years and has shown plenty of power against LHP this season posting a 1.056 OPS. Suarez is also 4 for 7 with 2 doubles & 4 RBI’s against Vargas in his career.
We’ll have to make sure that the switch-hitting Barnhart gets the start tonight, however if he does, I think he has some great value at just $2,200. Barnhart has some HR upside and although it’s been a limited sample against LHP this season, he is 3 for 7 with a double against LHP. Barnhart has had success against Vargas in his career as he is 2 for 2 against him with a triple.
At 1B, we’re going with Nate Lowe of the Tampa Bay Rays as the slugging first-baseman has some great value at just $2,300 and you have to love that he hit 5th in the batting order last night. Lowe posted a .300 average/.987 OPS in 21 games with Triple-A Durham this season and I like his matchup against a HR Prone Jakob Junis of the Royals who is allowing LHB’s to post a .348 average/1.016 OPS against him on the season.
Speaking of HR-prone pitchers, the Dodgers get a nice match-up against the LHP Drew Pomeranz of the Giants tonight who comes in with a 1.46 HR/9 ratio. You have to love Kiki Hernandez tonight who should be hitting leadoff and continues to mash LHP as he comes into this game with a .333 average/1.125 OPS vs. left-handers on the season.
Pittsburgh’s Jordan Lyles came back to earth in his last start as he gave up 4 ERs on 8 hits (2 HR’s) against the Diamondbacks and I expect the RHP who has a career 5.19 ERA, to continue to struggle tonight in Texas. I’m paying up for the slugging Joey Gallo who comes into this game with a 1.121 OPS vs. RHP and a 1.204 OPS at home this season.
Rounding out the team, I’m going with some value in Pittsburgh’s Gregory Polanco who came back last week after missing the beginning of the season due to a shoulder injury from last season. Polanco is hitting a respectable .286 on the season and it will on be a matter of time until he is hitting HR’s and stealing bases as we know he can do. Polanco has a solid match-up in Texas tonight as he will be going up against the RHP Adrian Sampson who is allowing opponents to post a .286 average & .891 OPS against him on the season.
As always, I will make any necessary updates due to confirmed lineups, weather, etc. I will do my best to update the post but if it’s a last-second update, it’s easier for me to post that with an image on Twitter (@BrettCU05).
