The WGC-Cadillac Championship will tee off this week, as the best golfers in the world meet in Doral, Florida. As usual, let’s take a look at some of the bargains on the board and include some players you should include on this week’s card.
Patrick Reed - Patrick Reed won the WGC-Cadillac Championship last season in a fight to the finish, just nipping Jamie Donaldson and Bubba Watson. This event has a weird history of producing multiple winners, as Ernie Els and Tiger Woods are the two names who have won here many times. Reed is playing some of his best golf of his young career since that victory, which includes a win at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, and he gave himself a shot to win last week’s Honda Classic. I expect to see a dialed in Patrick Reed, who feels the need to right a wrong after last week. I’ll throw him a bone or two with odds of +2200.
Jordan Spieth - For whatever reason, Jordan Spieth doesn’t get much love from anyone. Maybe it has to do with the fact he hasn’t won a PGA event since the 2013 John Deere Classic. Still, Spieth has finished in the Top 10 in four of his last five appearances, including a fourth spot at the Northern Trust Open. Assuming Spieth can continue to be right in the thick of it, it’s only a matter of time before he breaks through and picks up a victory. It’s all about consistency with me and somebody who gives themselves a chance to win each week deserves some of your money. I’ll include Jordan Spieth on my card with odds of +1600.
Henrik Stenson - Henrik Stenson will make his U.S. debut this week after producing some solid finishes in Europe. Although ranked as the third best golfer in the world at the moment, Stenson is still looking for his major breakthrough in the States, and that could start with a victory this week in Doral. Stenson’s last PGA event was a second place finish at the Hero World Challenge. There’s always concerns of Stenson shaking off the cobwebs, but assuming he’s ready to make a strong push this season, you have to take a shot with odds of +2500. I expect a strong outing from Henrik Stenson this week.
Webb Simpson - If you’re looking for a real dark horse this week, look no further than Webb Simpson. Simpson had a horrible showing at the Northern Trust Open in which he didn’t make the cut but if you’re able to remove that performance out of your head, you’ll see some solid golf being played. Webb Simpson has two Top 10 finishes in his last five events and is first in overall scoring average. Simpson has a history of playing his best when folks least expect it, so I’ll throw him a bone with odds of +6600.
