CJ Cup: Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 1:00 pm (Nine Bridges Golf Club)
We head to South Korea for the CJ Cup, which is only one year old and provided us with an inuring playoff last year that Justin Thomas won over Marc Leishman. We didn’t pick a winner last week in the CIMB Classic, but four of our five golfers finished inside the top-25, which included two top-five finishers. We’re knocking on that door again.
Here are five golfers to consider throwing on your card this week.
Marc Leishman - Marc Leishman is coming off a win last week and has finished in the top-25 in five of his last nine events overall. Leishman was so much better than the rest of the field in the CIMB Classic, winning by at least five strokes over the rest of the field. Of course, Leishman finished runner-up at this event last year. I’ll ride the hot hand with Leishman and +1400 odds.
Alex Noren - Alex Noren finished the season strong with his performance in the Ryder Cup and a top-25 finish in the BMW Championship. Noren has a top-25 finish in five of his last seven events in which he’s made the cut, and he’s been a combined 15 strokes under par in his last two tournaments overall. You just have to like the way Noren is hitting the ball right now, and it makes him at +3300 odds worth a look.
Hideki Matsuyama - Few golfers are as hot as Hideki Matsuyama right now, as he’s finished four or more strokes under par in each of his last six events and has finished 15th or better in each of his last five events. Matsuyama finished last season 23rd in scoring average and 21st in birdie average. Matsuyama didn’t play in this event last year, but there’s no ignoring the way he’s played the last few months. Matsuyama deserves to be one of the favorites this weekend, and you can still get him at +1400 odds.
Cameron Smith - Cameron Smith put up a -16 last week in the CIMB Classic and has now been double-digit strokes under par in three of his last five events. After a long string of missed cuts, Smith has also finished in the top-25 in five of his last seven events. It’s easily one of his best stretches of golf we’ve seen from Smith in quite some time, and it wouldn’t be shocking if his second career PGA victory is approaching. Smith also finished third in this event last year. Give me Smith and the +3000 odds.
Kyle Stanley - Kyle Stanley was -18 last week in the CIMB Classic and has finished at least three strokes below par in each of his last five events. Stanley has also finished inside the top-20 in four of his last seven events and has missed the cut once since The Open Championship. Stanley has finished below par in six of his last seven tournaments and shot a -2 at the CJ Cup last year, which was good for a top-20 finish. Stanley is a strong dark horse play this week at +5000 odds.
