We make our first of two scheduled trips to Nevada for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, an event that debuted over 30 years ago and will be played at the TPC at Summerlin. Last week in the WGC-HSBC Champions, four of the five drivers we listed finished in the top-25, including the second and third place finishers. If Tony Finau was able to win a playoff, we would have hit on +1800 odds. We’re getting closer.
Here are five golfers to consider throwing on your card this week.
Patrick Cantlay - Patrick Cantlay is 13 strokes under par in his first two events and is currently ninth in driving distance. Cantlay has finished five or more strokes under par in six of his last eight tournaments and hasn’t missed a cut since the Fort Worth Invitational. We haven’t seen somebody win this event back-to-back years since the late 90s with Jim Furyk, but there’s value with Cantlay at +1600 odds anyway.
Scott Piercy - Scott Piercy is 25 strokes under par in his last two events and is five or more strokes under par in three of his last four events overall. Piercy is also currently first in driving accuracy percentage. While wins have been hard to come by over the years, you take his current form and the fact Piercy has top-25 finishes in four of his last six appearances at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, and you have to like +6600 odds this week.
Ryan Moore - Ryan Moore wasn’t great in either the CIMB Classic or the CJ Cup, but he’s still fifth in driving accuracy percentage, sixth in greens in regulation percentage and first in scoring average. Moore keeps that up and the results will come. Moore also has top-20 finishes in three of his last six appearances at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which includes a victory in 2012. Moore and +5500 odds is a nice under the radar play this weekend.
Kevin Na - Kevin Na is coming off a rough performance last week at the WGC-HSBC Champions when he finished 10 strokes over par. Na has been a real up and down player recently and his last top-10 finish came when he won the Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. If trends hold, this should be a week where Na bounces back, and he’s won this event in 2011 and finished runner-up in 2016. When Na does well at this tournament, he does extremely well. I’ll take Na and the +4000 odds.
Rickie Fowler - It’s been a while since we’ve seen Rickie Fowler, but he left with four straight top-20 finishes and finishing five or more strokes under par in seven of his last nine events. Despite no victories, Fowler was one of the hotter players to finish up the 2018 season. Fowler enters this week rested and has an average finish of 18th in his three appearances at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. I’ll take a shot with one of the favorites in Fowler and +1100 odds.
