Spring training is soon underway and the MLB regular season will be here before you know it. So, while you’re looking over the rosters and crunching in the numbers, you should be also throwing a few dollars on a few future bets. Of course, there are the favorites to win the World Series, but more times than not it’s a team that very few were paying attention to that ends up hoisting the trophy when all said and done.
Here are a few dark horses in the American League that could return a pretty penny:
Toronto Blue Jays: Last season was supposed to be the year the Blue Jays made a run after stockpiling an impressive roster. Well, that didn’t happen. Still, this is a solid team that has a loaded lineup assuming Jose Reyes can stay healthy. They finished ninth in runs scored last season and have one of the best bullpens in baseball when not being asked to throw five-six innings. They’re in a brutal division but the talent is there. Odds at +2800 are tough to ignore.
Seattle Mariners: We know about the addition of Robinson Cano, which makes this team drastically better in itself. But there’s tons of other young talent on this team. Kyle Seager had a tremendous first half of the season last year, Justin Smoak is just tapping into his potential and Logan Morrison adds even more pop to the lineup assuming he can put last year’s struggles behind him. The addition of closer Fernando Rodney also doesn’t hurt. There’s always that young team that comes out of nowhere. Seattle may be it this season. I give them a shot at +2000.
Cleveland Indians: What am I missing? I guess oddmakers don’t believe the Indians can build on last year’s magic carpet ride, as their odds are currently at +4000. That’s insane for a team that finished fifth in runs scored and an OK 15th in ERA. Cleveland has the championship pedigree in skipper Terry Francona and a nice combination of youth and experience. Sure, the pitching has to improve on last year’s numbers, but this is a confident team that will be playing with a chip on its shoulder. Those teams are always scary.
Tampa Bay Rays: Odds are at +1400 at most places. That deserves a couple Benjamin’s at least. Just do it.
