MLB | Texas Rangers (6-9) at Los Angeles Angels (7-9)

The Los Angeles Angels and the Texas Rangers face off on Friday in Anaheim in game one of their MLB series of AL West teams.

The Los Angeles Angels have struggled to put wins together but even so they are very much in the thick of things on the weak American League West. The Angels are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 2-5 at home and they are 1.5 games back in the AL West standings. As a team the Angels are hitting .222 with Mike Trout hitting .316, Johnny Giavotella hitting .304, and Kole Calhoun hitting .271. The Angels pitching staff has an ERA of 4.40 with the starters at 4.71 and the bullpen at 3.83. For game one against the Rangers the Angels start Garrett Richards who allowed five hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out four over 5.0 innings taking the loss to the Astros in his only start this year.

The Texas Rangers are off to a slow start to the season but in the soft AL West it hasn’t cost them in the standings. The Rangers are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 4-5 on the road, and they are two games back in the AL West standings. As a team the Rangers are hitting .215 with Price Fielder hitting .367, Leonys Martin hitting .238, and Mitch Moreland hitting .290. The Rangers pitching staff has an ERA of 4.51 with the starters at 4.82 and the bullpen at 4.13. For game one at Anaheim the Rangers start Wandy Rodriguez who pitched for the Pirates last season where he allowed 37 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 20 over 26.2 innings for a 0-2 record and a 6.75 ERA.

Los Angeles is 2-7 in game two of a series, 4-10 as a favorite, and 6-1 in Richards’ last seven starts as a home favorite. Texas is 7-3 in game one of a series, 9-22 following an off day, and 2-6 against a team with a losing record. Texas is 5-16 in their last 21 games against Los Angeles.

While I don’t believe the Angels merit the type of odds we are seeing as the favorite, I do think they are the better team in a better spot and should get the win.
