The Line: Los Angeles Angels -175 / Kansas City Royals +155 --- Over/Under: 7.5
The Los Angeles Angels and the Kansas City Royals face off on Thursday in Anaheim for game one of their ALDS.
The Los Angeles Angels finished the season with the best record in baseball and after several years of disappointing finishes they have he home field advantage in the post season. The Angels took what was the most competitive division in baseball, the AL West, and turned it into a runaway winning it by 10 games over the A’s. As a team the Angels are hitting .259 with Howie Kendrick hitting .293, Mike Trout hitting .287, and Erick Aybar hitting .278. The Angels pitching staff has an ERA of 3.58 with the starters at 3.62 and the bullpen at 3.58. For game one against the Royals the Angels start Jered Weaver who is 18-9 for the season with a 3.59 ERA and 2-1 in his last three starts with a 3.60 ERA. Weaver looks to have reinvented himself using a variety of pitches to get it done.
The Kansas City Royals advanced to this series with one of the more exciting wins beating the Oakland A’s at home in the AL Wildcard playoff in extra innings. The Royals were 47-34 on the road this season but the question is will they be able to recover quickly enough and then endure the travel to be on top of their game for this one. As a team the Royals are hitting .263 with Norichika Aoki hitting .285, Alcides Escobar hitting .285, and Billy Butler hitting .271. The Royals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.53 with the starters at 3.62 and the bullpen at 3.32. For game one at the Big A the Royals start Jason Vargas who was 11-10 for the season with a 3.71 ERA but he is 0-2 with a 9.95 ERA in his last three starts.
Los Angeles is 41-17 in their last 58 home games, 36-16 against the AL Central, 2-5 in their last seven games, and 6-2 in Weaver’s last eight starts against a team with a winning record. Kansas City is 4-1 in their last five games, 6-2 in their last eight road games, 4-1 following an off day, and 1-5 in Vargas’ last six road starts. Kansas City is 3-7 in their last 10 meetings with Los Angeles.
I expect the hitters to win this battle and my free pick in this one is the over. My stronger pick is on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
