The Line: Arizona Diamondbacks -130 / Chicago Cubs +120 --- Over/Under: 9
The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago Cubs face off on Friday in Arizona for game one of their series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks had a rough start to the season and they probably are already playing for next year. The Diamondbacks are 17-31 at home this season, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they are 13.5 games back in the NL West. As a team the Diamondbacks are hitting .254 with Paul Goldschmidt hitting .308, Martin Prado hitting .275, and Miguel Montero hitting .262. The Arizona pitching staff has an ERA of 4.27 with the starters at 4.58 and the bullpen at 3.66. For game one against the Cubs Arizona starts Trevor Cahill who has worked primarily from the bullpen this season. For the year Cahill has allowed 47 hits and 26 earned runs while striking out 44 over 41.1 innings for a 1-6 record and a 5.66 ERA.
The Chicago Cubs are having a building year and have taken their lumps for the bulk of the season. The Cubs are 20-32 on the road, 2-8 in their last 10 games, and they are 12 games back in the NL Central. As a team the Cubs are hitting .237 with Starlin Castro hitting .276, Anthony Rizzo hitting .275, and Chris Coghlan hitting .275. The Cubs pitching staff has an ERA of 3.86 with the starters at 3.99 and the bullpen is at 3.61. For game one at Arizona the Cubs start Edwin Jackson who has lost five of his last six decisions. For the season Jackson has allowed 117 hits and 66 earned runs while striking out 97 over 105.1 innings for a 5-10 record and a 5.64 ERA.
Arizona is 4-1 following a loss, 2-8 against the NL Central, and 0-5 in Cahill’s last five starts. Chicago is 4-0 following an off day, 1-6 in their last seven road games, and 7-22 in Jackson’s last 29 starts. Chicago is 17-28 in their last 55 games in Arizona.
Both of these teams are fully capable of beating themselves and with that being said I will take the Cubs here.
