The Line: Atlanta Braves -105 / Arizona Diamondbacks -116 --- Over/Under: 8.5
The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Atlanta Braves meet in game two of a three game set from SunTrust Park in MLB action on Saturday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be looking to build some momentum after taking the opener of the series on Friday by a final score of 2-1. Nick Ahmed and Jon Jay each had an RBI to make up Arizona’s scoring in the win, with Ahmed going 2 for 4 at the dish with a double. Steven Souza Jr. went 2 for 4 with a double as well while Alex Avila added a two-bagger and Paul Goldschmidt chipped in a base hit as well to round out Arizona’s offense in the win. Zack Godley got the win to improve to 11-6 this season, giving up the one run on five hits while striking out seven over six innings of work. Brad Boxberger struck out the side in the 9th for his 23rd save of the year. Zack Greinke will start game two and is 9-5 with a 3.39 ERA and 117 strikeouts this season. In his career, Greinke is 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA and 59 strikeouts against Atlanta.
The Atlanta Braves will look to rebound after dropping game one on Friday. Kurt Suzuki accounted for Atlanta’s lone run on the board while Ronald Acuna Jr. added a double. Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis each went 2 for 4 at the dish to round out Atlanta’s offense in the losing effort as the Braves cranked out six hits as a team in the loss. Animal Sanchez gave up one run on five hits while striking out six over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Sam Freeman took the loss to fall to 2-5 this season. Sean Newcomb will get the nod in game two and is 8-4 with a 3.44 ERA and 95 strikeouts this season. This will be Newcomb’s first career start against Arizona.
Arizona is 6-2 in Greinke’s last 8 starts and 12-4 in their last 16 road games while the under is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games against the NL East. Atlanta is 0-4 in Newcomb’s last 4 starts and 2-6 in their last 8 games overall while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 home games against a team with a winning road record. Arizona is 8-20 in the last 28 meetings between these two teams in Arizona.
If you had given me this game about a month ago, I would’ve been on Atlanta like white on rice. However, the Braves have hit a rough patch lately, dropping seven of nine and Newcomb has been a part of that, as the Braves have dropped his last four starts, with Newcomb allowing 13 runs over 12.1 innings of work, translating to an ERA just shy of 9.50. Greinke has allowed just four runs in his last four starts combined and has been in better form winning six of his last eight starts. I think Arizona with Greinke and the low line should be the play on Saturday.
