The Line: Atlanta Braves -183 / Miami Marlins +173 --- Over/Under: 9.5
Down at SunTrust Park on Friday, the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves will be kicking off their weekend MLB set.
The Marlins just finished a trio of games versus the Dodgers. After taking the first two 4-2 and 6-5, on Thursday Miami lost 7-0.
Dan Straily will be taking the hill for the Marlins on Friday. In his 13.0 innings and 1-0 record this year, Straily has a 5.54 ERA with eight Ks and 11 BBs.
The Marlins’ leading hitter entering Thursday was Starlin Castro with 48 hits, 25 runs and 19 RBI. In the Thursday game, Castro was 0-for-2.
As for the Braves, they played the Cubs this week. Atlanta lost Tuesday but won on Monday and Wednesday. On Thursday, we had a rainout. No makeup date was initially announced.
Atlanta’s starter on Friday will be Sean Newcomb. Over his 46.2 innings and 4-1 mark this season so far, Newcomb has a 2.51 ERA with 54 Ks and 22 BBs.
Coming into this series, the Braves’ leading hitter is Nick Markakis with 56 hits, 30 runs, seven homers and 30 RBI.
The Marlins are 6-18 in their last 24 in game one of a series and 4-0 in Straily’s last four starts. Miami is also 5-1 in Straily’s last six Friday starts and 2-6 in his last eight road starts.
Meanwhile, the Braves are 4-1 in their last five in game one of a series and 0-4 in their last four Friday games. Atlanta is also 4-1 in Newcomb’s last five starts in game one of a series and 2-5 in his last seven starts with four days’ rest.
Straily doesn’t have a huge body of work this year to dissect, but he’s given up four earned on six hits over his last two starts and 9.0 innings. Newcomb, meanwhile, has been clean over this last 19.0 innings, giving up just five hits and zero earned. I’m going to stick with Newcomb to stay hot here and take the Braves.
