Over: 8.5 (-110) / Under: 8.5 (-105)
The New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves duke it out in the finale of their four game NL East division set from SunTrust Park in MLB action on Sunday Night Baseball.
The New York Mets will look to win the set after dropping game three on Saturday by a final score of 11-7. Juan Lagares went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, Travis D’Arnaud and Corey Oswalt each had an RBI in the losing effort with McNeil going 2 for 5 at the dish. Pete Alonso, Michael Conforto and Dominic Smith each chipped in a double while Keon Broxton and Amed Rosario each had a base hit as well in defeat. Jason Vargas lasted less than a full inning in the start, allowing four runs on two hits with three walks, not factoring in the decision. Oswalt took the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing five runs over 3.2 innings of work. Jacob DeGrom will start game four and is 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA and 27 strikeouts this season. In his career, DeGrom is 6-5 with a 1.70 ERA and 124 strikeouts against Atlanta.
The Atlanta Braves will look to salvage a split in the series after lighting up the scoreboard on Saturday. Dansby Swanson led the Braves with three RBIs while Johan Camargo, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Nick Markakis each had two hits and two RBIs with Markakis hitting a home run and a double. Josh Donaldson and Freddie Freeman each had two hits and an RBI with Donaldson hitting a solo blast as well as a double. Ozzie Albies went 2 for 3 to cap off Atlanta’s offensive outburst in the victory. Sean Newcomb lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, not factoring in the decision. Touki Toussaint got the win to improve to 1-0 after tossing six innings of relief. Julio Teheran will start game four and is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA and 17 strikeouts this season. In his career, Teheran is 9-7 with a 2.39 ERA and 117 strikeouts against New York.
New York is 4-1 in DeGrom’s last 5 starts and 5-1 in their last 6 road games while the over is 10-2-1 in their last 13 games overall. Atlanta is 7-3 in Teheran’s last 10 starts and 8-3 in their last 11 games overall while the under is 5-1-1 in their last 7 division games. The under is 6-0 in DeGrom’s last 6 starts against Atlanta and the under is 4-0 in Teheran’s last 4 home starts against the Mets.
The plus money with Atlanta is tempting considering how well the Braves normally play at home, but the Mets have their best arm on the mound in DeGrom. The problem on that side is that I got burned with DeGrom last time out when he got absolutely rocked by Minnesota for six runs in four innings. Instead, I’m going to side with the under. DeGrom posted a 0.88 ERA in six starts against Atlanta last season, while Teheran had a 1.65 ERA across five starts against the Mets last year. I’m expecting a pitchers’ duel in this one.
