The Atlanta Braves and he Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Thursday in Atlanta as they close out their series.
The Atlanta Braves have had a miserable last month of the season but they got a brief reprieve from the losing beating the Pirates on Wednesday. Justin Upton hit a home run and Andrelton Simmons, Chris Johnson, and Christian Bethancourt each had two hits as the Braves scored six runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Julio Teheran allowed six hits and two runs while striking out six over 5.0 innings to get the win to go to 14-13 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Braves start David Hale who is 4-4 with a 3.27 ERA for the season and 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts.
The Pittsburgh Pirates took the loss on Wednesday in Atlanta and while they are running out of time they didn’t lose any ground on the Cardinals who also lost. Andrew McCutchen hit a home run, Starling Marte had two hits, and Josh Harrison had a hit as the Pirates scored two runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Jeff Locke allowed eight hits and six runs while striking out three lasting just four innings to take the loss and fall to 7-6 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Pirates start Edinson Volquez who is 12-7 with a 3.15 ERA for the season and 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last three starts.
Atlanta is 9-20 in their last 29 games, 1-6 as an underdog, and 1-5 in their last six home games. Pittsburgh is 4-1 in their last five road games, 19-8 in their last 27 games, and 6-2 in Volquez’s last eight starts as a favorite.
The Pirates didn’t have it on Wednesday but look for them to get back to business here and win easily.
