St. Louis Cardinals -123 / Atlanta Braves +113 -- O/U: 8.5
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves meet in the opener of a three game set in MLB action from SunTrust Park on Tuesday night.
The St. Louis Cardinals will be looking for a win after losing their series with Pittsburgh, including a 10-6 defeat in the series finale on Sunday. Paul Goldschmidt and Jose Martinez each had a home run and two RBIs with Martinez having three hits to Goldschmidt’s two. Jedd Gyorko had an RBI while going 2 for 5 while Yairo Munoz went also 2 for 5 with a double. Yadier Molina, Kolten Wong and Dakota Hudson each had base hits as well in the losing effort for the Cards. Hudson allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. John Brebbia took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year in the process. Jack Flaherty will start game one and is 3-3 with a 4.32 ERA and 47 strikeouts this season. This will be Flaherty’s second career start against Atlanta.
The Atlanta Braves will look to keep the momentum going after winning their series with Arizona, taking the series finale on Sunday by a final score of 5-3. Johan Camargo and Tyler Flowers each went 2 for 4 with two RBIs with Flowers adding a triple. Ender Inciarte chipped in an RBI of his own to round out Atlanta’s scoring as a team in the winning effort. Charlie Culberson went 3 for 4 while Nick Markakis had a triple. Ronald Acuna Jr., Dansby Swanson and Matt Joyce each had a base hit as well in the win. Max Fried got the win to improve to 5-2 on the year after allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out seven over five innings of work. Luke Jackson closed out the 8th and 9th innings for his 4th save of the season. Mike Foltynewicz will start game one and is 0-2 with a 5.94 ERA and 10 strikeouts this season. In his career, Foltynewicz is 2-3 with an 8.06 ERA and 20 strikeouts against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 1-4 in their last 5 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games against the NL East. Atlanta is 3-7 in their last 10 games overall and 5-2 in their last 7 games against the NL Central while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 Tuesday games. The over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 8-1 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams in Atlanta.
I would like to take a shot with Atlanta and the plus money, but the fact is that Foltynewicz has struggled out of the gate and has allowed 15 runs in 15.2 innings this season. Folty also has had issues against the Cardinals in his career with an ERA over eight. On the other hand, Flaherty has given up at least three runs in four of his last five starts. I think this could be a 5-4 type of game, so I’ll take a shot with the over in this contest.
