Atlanta Braves -105 / Washington Nationals -115
The Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves meet in the opener of a three game NL East division set from SunTrust Park on Tuesday night.
The Washington Nationals will look to rebound after failing to complete the sweep of the Miami Marlins, dropping the series finale on Monday by a final score of 3-2. Max Scherzer and Brian Dozier each had an RBI to round out Washington’s scoring as a team in the loss. Juan Soto and Gerardo Parra each had a double while Kurt Suzuki and Howie Kendrick each added base hits of their own as well in the losing effort. Scherzer gave up one run on seven hits while striking out six over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Kyle Barraclough ended up with the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. Stephen Strasburg will start game one and is 4-3 with a 3.25 ERA and 87 strikeouts this season. In his career, Strasburg is 11-11 with a 4.07 ERA and 199 strikeouts against Atlanta.
The Atlanta Braves will look to keep the momentum going after winning four of their last five games following a 4-3 win in the series finale against St. Louis on Sunday. Ozzie Albies went 2 for 5 with an RBI while Brian McCann, Austin Riley and Josh Donaldson each had RBIs as well to round out Atlanta’s scoring as a team in the victory. Freddie Freeman went 2 for 5 with a double while Ronald Acuna Jr. went 2 for 5 as well. Dansby Swanson chipped in a base hit of his own to round out Atlanta’s offense in the winning effort. Julio Teheran gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits while walking four over five innings of work. Jacob Webb got the win to improve to 3-0 on the year while Luke Jackson picked up his 7th save of the season. Max Fried will start game one and is 7-2 with a 2.88 ERA and 51 strikeouts this season. This will be Fried’s second career start against Washington.
Washington is 38-13 in Strasburg’s last 51 division starts and 0-5 in their last 5 road games while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 division games. Atlanta is 4-1 in Fried’s last 5 starts and 5-0 in their last 5 division games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games against a right-handed starter. Washington is 1-4 in Strasburg’s last 5 starts against Atlanta.
Getting Strasburg at even/plus money is tempting, because he’s been one of the better Washington pitchers this season. However, Washington needs to do more than win a couple games over Miami to turn the corner in my opinion, while Atlanta has been the better team over the last little bit. This is also a pretty good price for the Braves with Fried on the mound, who leads the team in wins. I think Fried can lead the Braves to another victory here, so I’ll side with Atlanta to draw first blood on Tuesday.
