MLB | Washington Nationals (64-52) at Atlanta Braves (59-58)

The Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals face off on Sunday at Turner Field in Atlanta on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

The Atlanta Braves are trying to keep pace with the Nationals in the NL East and after gaining a game with a win on Friday they gave it back on Saturday with a loss. Freddie Freeman and Emilio Bonifacio each had three hits and Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson each added hits as the Braves scored just one run on nine hits. Starting pitcher Aaron Harang allowed seven hits and a run while striking out two over seven innings to not get  a decision as David Carpenter took the loss to fall to 4-2 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Braves start Alex Wood who has lost three of his last four decisions. For the season Wood has allowed 1-6 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 107 over 109.2 innings for a 7-9 record and a 3.20 ERA.

The Washington Nationals are looking to send the Braves a message this series and on Saturday they leveled the series at a game each by beating the Braves in extra innings. Ada La Roche had three hits including a home run and Denard Span and Bryce Harper had two hits each as the Nats scored four runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Tanner Roark allowed six hits and a run while striking out six over 7.0 innings for a no decision as Tyler Clippard got the win to go to 7-2 for the season and Rafael Soriano earned his 26th save. For Sunday’s game the nationals start Gio Gonzalez who has lost his last four decisions. For the season Gonzalez has allowed 90 hits and 46 earend runs while striking out 106 over 103.1 innings for a 6-8 record and a 4.01 ERA.

Atlanta is 1-7 following a loss, 4-1 in their last five home games, and 1-5 in Wood’s last six starts. Washington is 5-2 against the NL East, 2-6 following a win, and 1-4 in Gonzalez’s last five starts. Washington is 10-25 in their last 35 games against Atlanta.

I expect both of these pitchers to give it their best effort and for my free pick I like the under. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
