Boston Red Sox (66-87) at Baltimore Orioles (92-60)
|Date & Time||Friday September 19, 2014, 7:05 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Baltimore Orioles -178 / Boston Red Sox +168 --- Over/Under: 8.5
The Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox face off on Friday as first takes on worst in the AL East.
The Baltimore Orioles have wrapped up the AL East and have their sights set on the post season. The Orioles have an outside shot at the best record in the AL but they are currently three games worse than the Angels. The Orioles are 20 games over .500 at home and they have won their last four games including a win after already clinching. As a team the Orioles are hitting .258 which is eighth best in baseball this season with Adam Jones leading the way at .284 and J.J. Hardy hitting .276. Kevin Gausman gets the start for Baltimore and he has a 3.57 ERA for the season and 2.53 ERA in his last three starts. The big question is just how motivated will the Orioles be.
The Boston Red Sox were unable to build off of last season’s momentum as they have spent the bulk of this season in last place in the AL East. The Red Sox have lost their last three games and are 35-42 on the road this season. The Red Sox are hitting .242 which ranks 24th in baseball Brock Holt hitting .281 and Dustin Pedroia hitting .278. Allen Webster gets the nod in this one as Boston’s starting pitcher and while he hasn’t shown it on the field the expectations of him are high as he was the primary player the Red Sox got when shipping some big name to the Dodgers a few seasons back. Webster has a 6.46 ERA in his last three starts and a 6.02 ERA for the year. The Red Sox seemed to have checked out weeks ago so it will be interesting to see if they can get fired up at all for the final week if the season.
Baltimore is 19-7 in game one of a series, 37-15 in their last 53 games, and 1-4 in Gausman’s last five starts. Boston is 5-2 in game one of a series, 3-8 in their last 11 games, and 0-4 against the AL East. Boston has lost their last five games against Baltimore.
While Baltimore doesn’t have a lot of motivation here, Boston has less and I give the Orioles the nod here.
