The Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles square off in game one of a three game AL East division set in MLB action from Camden Yards on Friday.
The Tampa Bay Rays had a day off on Thursday and needed it to recoup after being swept in a mini two game set with Atlanta, losing the finale by a final score of 5-2 on Wednesday. Wilson Ramos went 1 for 4, accounting for both Tampa Bay runs in the loss. Matt Duffy and Mallex Smith each added a double, with Duffy going 2 for 3 at the dish, while C.J. Cron added a pair of base hits and Denard Span and Daniel Robertson each contributed base hits as well in the losing effort. Ryan Yarbrough took the loss, falling to 2-2 this season after giving up all five runs on six hits while striking out seven over five innings of work. Jake Faria will start game one and is 3-1 with a 4.15 ERA and 30 strikeouts this season. In his career, Faria is 1-0 with a 4.78 ERA and 27 strikeouts against Baltimore.
The Baltimore Orioles will look to build some steam after winning their series with Kansas City, taking back-to-back wins, including an 11-6 victory in the series finale on Thursday. Adam Jones led the O’s, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Trey Mancini and Manny Machado each had two RBIs with a home run, while Mancini also added a double, going 3 for 5. Chance Sisco added a double with two RBIs, while Anthony Santander and Jonathan Schoop each chipped in an RBI to round out the scoring for Baltimore in the win. Mark Trumbo went 2 for 3 with a double while Jace Peterson added a base hit as well in the winning effort. Chris Tillman gave up all six runs, five earned, on four hits in just 1.1 innings of work in the start. Miguel Castro got the win to improve to 1-1 this season after 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. Kevin Gausman will start game one and is 2-2 with a 3.30 ERA and 36 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gausman is 5-5 with a 3.57 ERA and 76 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 4-0 in Faria’s last 4 starts and 6-2 in their last 8 division matchups while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 road games. Baltimore is 3-7 in Gausman’s last 10 starts and 13-46 in their last 59 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 division matchups. Tampa Bay is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Baltimore.
You could argue that the Orioles have been playing better baseball this week, however a pair of wins isn’t enough to sway me towards Baltimore here. The Orioles are still struggling, and Tampa Bay is playing the better overall baseball in the first month of the season. The Rays have also been money with Faria on the mound as of late, and considering their success in this matchup, getting plus money with Tampa Bay sounds good to me.
