MLB | Minnesota Twins (46-53) at Boston Red Sox (71-32)
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

Coming up Thursday from Fenway Park, the Minnesota Twins will be visiting the Boston Red Sox to kick off their weekend MLB series.

The Twins are fresh off a set against the Blue Jays this week. After taking the first two games 8-3 and 5-0, on Wednesday Minnesota won big 12-6 in an 11-inning thriller.

The Twins will be trotting out Kyle Gibson on Thursday for the start. Across his 121.0 innings and 4-7 mark this year, Gibson had a 3.57 ERA with 119 Ks and 48 BBs.

Eddie Rosario tops the Twins’ hitters, bringing 122 hits, 69 runs, 19 homers and 62 RBI into Wednesday. In that game, Rosario was 3-for-6.

As for the Red Sox, they just finished up against the Orioles. Boston split the first pair of games in that set, then on Wednesday we had an eventual rainout after the Sox jumped out to a homer-heavy 5-0 lead.

The Sox are rolling with Brian Johnson on Thursday for the SP role. In his 54.1 innings and 1-3 record this year, Johnson has a 3.81 ERA with 47 Ks and 17 BBs.

Coming into the Baltimore finale, JD Martinez led the Sox on 119 hits, 74 runs, 31 homers and 85 RBI. On Wednesday, Martinez hit a solo homer before the plug was pulled on the game.

The Twins are 4-1 in their last five in game one of a series and 9-3 in Gibson’s last 12 starts in game one of a series. Minnesota is 1-4 in Gibson’s last five road starts and 1-5 in his last six starts with five days’ rest.

Meanwhile, the Sox are 6-0 in the last six in game one of a series and 4-0 in the last four Thursday games. Boston is 6-1 in their last seven versus the AL Central and 9-1 in Johnson’s last 10 starts.

Gibson has been a little choppy lately, with at least three earned allowed in four of his last five starts—even though he’s been getting pretty deep into games. As for Johnson, he has five earned across his four starts since June 28, but hasn’t made it through the fifth inning in three of those four. All of that said, it’s hard to pick against the Sox right now. I’m going to go with Boston.

Pick:
Boston Red Sox -173
