The Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs will match up on the MLB circuit in game one of their series Monday.
The Reds just finished a set against the Rockies. Cincinnati fell 3-2 on Friday but won a high-flying game 17-9 Saturday. In the Sunday rubber match, the Reds fell in a tough one 10-9.
For the Monday opener, the Reds will be sending out Luis Castillo in the start. Across his 106.0 innings and 8-3 mark so far, Castillo has a 2.29 ERA with 124 Ks and 53 BBs.
Over on the Cubs’ side, they’re coming off a series versus the Pirates. Chicago swept that one, winning 4-3 Friday, 10-4 Saturday and 8-3 in the Sunday finale.
Chicago is going with Kyle Hendricks as their starter on Monday. In 95.1 innings this year, Hendricks has a 7-7 record with a 3.49 ERA, 85 Ks and 19 BBs.
The Reds are 10-4 in Castillo’s last 14 starts in game one of a series and 1-4 in their last five in game one of a series. The under is 9-1-1 in Cincinnati’s last 11 in game one of a series and the over is 4-1-1 in their last six Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are 2-5 in their last seven Monday games and 4-1 in Hendricks’ last five starts versus a team with a losing record. Chicago is 5-1 in Hendricks’ last six home starts and 7-3 in his last 10 in game one of a series.
Castillo has been quite steady over his last six outings, with five quality starts mixed in there. The only outlier was a four-earned loss in Milwaukee across 3.2 innings.
As for Hendricks, he had a good run of starts in May and June, but has lost his last three appearances and didn’t go past 4.1 innings in any of those.
I’m not super thrilled about Hendricks or the Cubs’ ability to support him right now so I’m going Reds here on a value play.
