The Line: Pittsburgh Pirates +136 / Chicago Cubs -148 -- Over/Under:
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs meet Friday in MLB action at Wrigley Field.
The Pittsburgh Pirates look to stay hot after winning eight of their last 12 games. The Pirates have scored 24 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in eight of their last 12 games. The Pittsburgh Pirates have won seven of their last eight games when scoring four or more runs. Josh Bell leads the Pirates with 102 hits and 84 RBI while Starling Marte and Adam Frazier have combined for 181 hits and 71 RBI. Chris Archer gets the ball, and he is 3-6 with a 5.49 ERA and 88 strikeouts this season. Archer is 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA and 37 strikeouts in his career against the Cubs.
The Chicago Cubs need a win here after losing eight of their last 12 games. The Cubs have scored 18 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in seven of their last 10 games. The Chicago Cubs have won six of their last nine games when scoring four or more runs. Javier Baez leads the Cubs with 103 hits and 62 RBI while Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo have combined for 180 hits and 102 RBI. Yu Darvish gets the ball, and he is 2-4 with a 5.01 ERA and 111 strikeouts this season. Darvish is 1-2 with a 3.75 ERA and 23 strikeouts in his career against the Pirates.
The Pirates are 8-3 in their last 11 games following a win, 1-4 in their last 5 games following an off day and 3-8 in Archer's last 11 road starts. The Cubs are 7-2 in their last 9 games following an off day, 1-4 in their last 5 vs. National League Central and 1-4 in Darvish's last 5 starts. The Pirates are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Chicago and the under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings in Chicago. The under is 3-1-1 in Darvish's last 5 starts overall. The over is 3-1-1 in Archer's last 5 starts overall.
Archer has been pretty bad this season, and a lot of his struggles have come on the road where he has a 7.89 ERA and .283 allowed batting average in 29.2 innings. Archer has allowed three or more earned runs in nine of his last 12 starts and hasn't gone past six innings since May 31. Darvish hasnt been much better lately, allowing 20 earned runs in his last 26 innings and giving up 10 homers since the month of May. Darvish also has a 6.23 ERA at Wrigley this season in 47.2 innings. I want no parts of either of these pitchers, so if forced to pick, I'd side with the Pirates and the plus money. The Pirates are playing better baseball right now anyway.
