St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs
|Date & Time||Friday May 3, 2019, 2:20 PM (EDT)|
Chicago Cubs -112 / St. Louis Cardinals +102
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs will meet up on the MLB diamond to kick off their rivalry series Friday.
The Cardinals are coming off a series versus the Nationals. St. Louis took the first three games of that set 6-3, 3-2 and 5-1. On Thursday we had a lengthy rain delay that likely cut into St. Louis’ travel plans, so keep an eye on the team’s energy level here. The Cardinals fell 2-1 in the Thursday finale.
For the Friday game, the Cardinals will be sending out Jack Flaherty. In his 31.0 innings and 3-1 mark this year, Flaherty has a 4.06 ERA with 36 Ks and six walks.
Over on the Cubs’ side, they’re fresh off a two-game set against the Mariners this week. Chicago won both of those games, 6-5 and 11-0 with an off day for travel Thursday.
For Friday’s matchup, the Cubs will be bringing out Kyle Hendricks in the start. Across 25.1 innings and a 1-4 record so far, Hendricks has a 5.33 ERA with 24 Ks and eight walks.
The Cardinals are 6-1 in their last seven versus the NL Central and 1-4 in their last five Friday games. St. Louis is 1-5 in Flaherty’s last six road starts and the over is 5-0-1 in their last six Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are 1-4 in Hendricks’ last five starts and 5-1 in his last six Friday starts. Chicago is 6-2 in Hendricks’ last eight home starts and 13-6 in his last 19 versus the NL Central.
Flaherty had two bad starts last month, putting up nine earned over 8.2 innings on 12 hits, but in his last outing he logged zero earned on four hits in a nice 7.0 innings versus the Reds.
As for Hendricks, he had a clean 7.0 innings at home versus the Diamondbacks, but then went to Arizona and imploded for seven earned in 5.0 innings on 10 hits.
I like Flaherty to keep it going here and tame the Cubs offense. I’m going Cardinals.
