The Chicago Cubs and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field as the get the weekend MLB action started.
The Chicago Cubs are clearly building for the future but along with that plan means taking a lot of lumps and they are taking plenty this season. The Cubs are 25-27 at home, 7-3 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a win on Thursday at Colorado. As a team the Cubs are hitting .240 with Chris Coghlan hitting .298, Anthony Rizzo hitting .281, and Starlin Castro hitting .278. As a team the Cubs pitching staff has an ERA of 3.90 with the starters at 4.05 and the bullpen at 3.63. For game one against the Rays the Cubs start Tsuyoshi Wada who makes his fifth start. For the season Wada has allowed 21 hits and eight earned runs while striking out 19 over 21.2 innings for a 1-1 record and a 3.32 ERA.
The Tampa Bay Rays are still alive in the AL Wildcard race but they are running out of time and games and can’t afford any more missteps. The Rays are 28-27 on the road, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a win on Wednesday. As a team the Rays are hitting .255 with James Loney hitting .292, Ben Zobrist hitting .278, and Matt Joyce hitting .276. The Rays pithing staff has an ERA of 3.65 with the starters at 3.68 and the bullpen at 3.59. For game one at Wrigley the Rays start Chris Archer who has won three of his last four decisions. For the season Archer has allowed 122 hits and 50 earned runs while striking out 117 over 131.2 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.42 ERA.
Chicago is 5-1 in their last six interleague games, 25-51 following a win, and 1-4 in their last five interleague home games. Tampa Bay is 8-0 as a road favorite, 5-1 in their last six interleague games, and 1-4 in Archer’s last five road starts as a favorite. Tampa Bay has won four of their last five against the Cubs.
