The Line: Chicago White Sox -120 / Detroit Tigers -103 --- Over/Under: 9
The Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox meet in game one of a three game AL Central division set from Guaranteed Rate Field in MLB action on Monday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to build some momentum after salvaging a series split with the Yankees following an 11-7 win in the series finale on Sunday. Victor Reyes led the Tigers with three RBIs, going 4 for 5 with a home run and two doubles. Jacoby Jones, Nick Castellanos and Ronny Rodriguez each had two RBIs, with Jones going 2 for 5 with a triple and a double while Castellanos added a double of his own. Dawel Lugo and Niko Goodrum each had an RBI to round out Detroit’s scoring in the win, while James McCann added a base hit to cap off Detroit’s offense. Matt Boyd got the win to improve to 9-12 this season after allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Michael Fulmer will start game one and is 3-10 with a 4.71 ERA and 100 strikeouts this season. In his career, Fulmer is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 28 strikeouts against the White Sox.
The Chicago White Sox will look to keep the ball rolling with wins in 13 of their last 19 games following an 8-0 win in the series finale against Boston on Sunday, salvaging a split for the White Sox. Matt Davidson went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Tim Anderson went 3 for 5 with a solo homer and two doubles. Daniel Palka added a solo shot of his own while Adam Engel, Yolmer Sanchez, Kevan Smith and Jose Rondon all chipped in RBIs in the winning effort. Yoan Moncada went 2 for 5 and Ryan LaMarre added a base hit of his own to round out the offense for the White Sox in the winning effort. James Shields got the win to improve to 6-15 this season after tossing six shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out six in the win. Reynaldo Lopez will start game one and is 5-9 with a 4.51 ERA and 116 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lopez is 1-1 with a 3.58 ERA and 21 strikeouts against Detroit.
Detroit is 6-22 in Fulmer’s last 28 starts and 0-5 in their last 5 division matchups while the over is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games overall. Chicago is 4-1 in their last 5 division matchups and 5-2 in their last 7 games against a right-handed starter while the over is 10-3 in Lopez’s last 13 starts overall. Detroit is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Chicago.
You have two teams in this matchup that were eliminated from playoff contention a long time ago, and with identical records at that. However, while both pulled off impressive series splits against the top two teams in the AL East respectively, the difference for me is that the White Sox have maintained this random winning stretch out of nowhere, while Detroit has struggled with consistency for most of the season. Fulmer has also allowed seven runs in two of his last three starts, so I’ll lay the juice with the White Sox as more of a fade from Fulmer on the mound.
