The New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox meet in game two of their four game set in MLB action from Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday.
The New York Yankees will look to bounce back after dropping the opener of the series on Thursday by a final score of 5-4. Brett Gardner had a home run and two RBIs while Clint Frazier went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Didi Gregorius and Gleyber Torres each had two hits while Mike Tauchman added a base hit as well in defeat. J.A. Happ allowed four runs on five hits while walking four over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Adam Ottavino ended up with the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year. CC Sabathia will start game two and is 3-3 with a 3.96 ERA and 47 strikeouts this season. In his career, Sabathia is 19-7 with a 3.67 ERA and 236 strikeouts against the White Sox.
The Chicago White Sox will look to build on their series opening victory over the Yankees from Thursday night. Tim Anderson led the charge, going 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs while Leury Garcia went 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs to make up Chicago’s scoring as a team in the win. Jose Abreu went 2 for 4 with a double while Ryan Cordell added a base hit as well to cap off Chicago’s offense as a team in the victory. Ivan Nova gave up four runs on six hits while striking out five over 5.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Evan Marshall got the win in relief to improve to 2-0 this season while Aaron Bummer picked up his first save of the year. Lucas Giolito will start game two and is 9-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 89 strikeouts this season. In his career, Giolito is 1-1 with a 9.90 ERA and 13 strikeouts against the Yankees.
New York is 2-6 in their last 8 road games and 1-4 in their last 5 games against the AL Central while the under is 3-0-1 in their last 4 Friday games. Chicago is 8-0 in Giolito’s last 8 starts and 8-2 in their last 10 home games while the under is 4-1 in Giolito’s last 5 home starts. New York is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The Yankees went from being a favorite around -200 on Thursday to being an underdog in Friday’s matchup, and I think that is a testament to how well Giolito has pitched this season. New York has been one of the better teams in the AL this season, and while they’ve been flying under the radar, the White Sox have shown signs of improvement and could be a team to watch later on in the year. But for right now, I just think that Giolito is pitching too well to bet against, winning each of his last seven decisions, so I’ll lay the juice with the White Sox in this spot.
