The Chicago White Sox and the Oakland A’s face off on Thursday as they close out their series in Chicago.
The Chicago White Sox have had their share of problems this year but that didn’t stop them from getting the win on Wednesday. Adam Eaton had two hits and Jose Abreu and Alexei Ramirez each had hits as the White Sox scored two runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Chris Bassit allowed five hits and a run while striking out five over 6.0 innings to not get a decision as Zach Putnam got the win and Jacob Petricka earned the save. For Thursday’s game Chicago start Chris Sale who has big numbers everywhere but the win total. For the season Sale has allowed 114 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 183 over 155 innings for an 11-3 record and a 2.09 ERA.
The Oakland A’s watched their lead in the AL Central get away from them and after Wednesday’s los they are in danger of losing their Wildcard spot. Coco Crisp, Josh Donaldson, and Adam Dunn each had hits as the A’s scored one run on five hits. Starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija allowed six hits and struck out six over 7.0 scoreless innings but Luke Gregorson blew his eighth save of the year and took the loss. For Thursday’s series finale the Athletics start Scott Kazmir who has struggled recently. For the season Samardzija has allowed 143 hits and 63 earned runs while striking out 140 over 165.2 innings for a 14-7 record and a 3.42 ERA.
Chicago is 3-6 against the AL West, 1-6 in their last seven road games, and 19-9 in Kazmir’s last 28 road starts. Oakland is 2-6 against the AL Central, 3-10 in their last 13 games, and 19-9 in Kazmir’s last 28 starts.
The A’s are reeling and facing Sale on the road isn’t likely to help that.
