MLB | Texas Rangers (16-27) at Chicago White Sox (10-29)
Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports

Headed our way from Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday, the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox will be kicking off their MLB series.

The Rangers are coming off a set versus the Mariners. Texas lost 9-8 on Tuesday, then in the Wednesday game the Rangers scored four times in the ninth inning on the way to a 5-1 win.

The Rangers are going with LHP Cole Hamels on Thursday. Over his 51.2 innings and 2-4 record this year, Hamels has a 3.48 ERA with 57 Ks and 21 BBs.

Tops in hitting for the Rangers entering play Wednesday was Nomar Mazara with 46 hits, 24 runs, 10 homers and 26 RBI. On Wednesday Mazara whiffed 0-for-4.

Over on the Sox’ side, they’re fresh off a set versus the Pirates. Chicago lost 7-0 on Tuesday and then in the Wednesday matchup the Sox lost 3-2.

James Shields will be taking the mound for the Sox on Thursday. Across 48.0 innings and a 1-4 record this year, Shields has a 5.44 ERA with 28 Ks and 22 BBs.

Chicago’s leading hitter this year has been Jose Abreu, who had 42 hits, 19 runs, seven homers and 21 RBI coming into the Pirates finale. In that one, Abreu was 1-for-5.

The Rangers are 4-13 in their last 17 during game one of a series and 4-1 in Hamels’ last five starts versus the AL Central. Texas is also 19-8 in Hamels’ last 27 starts in game one of a series and 1-6 in his last seven starts.

Meanwhile, the Sox are 6-2 in their last eight Thursday games and 1-4 in their last five in game one of a series. Chicago is also 1-8 in their last nine versus the AL West and 0-5 in Shields’ last five starts.

Hamels has had a couple of hiccups here and there this season, but has given up just two earned over 12.0 innings on six hits in his last two starts. As for Shields, he’s had some bumps as well and gave up five earned on seven hits in 6.0 innings in his last start. With Hamels on the mound, I have to go Rangers here.

Pick:
Texas Rangers -133
