The Line: Cincinnati Reds +170 / Chicago Cubs -180 --- Over/Under: 8.5
Coming up Tuesday from the Great American Ball Park, the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds will be continuing their MLB series.
In the Monday opener of this set, we had an intense defensive battle and the Reds came away with a 1-0 victory.
For Tuesday’s game, the Cubs will be going with LHP Jon Lester for the start. In his 3.1 innings from his lone appearance this year, Lester carries an 8.10 ERA with two Ks.
Heading into this set, Kris Bryant led the Cubs on seven hits with four RBI and four runs, while Kyle Schwarber had five hits and two homers. On Monday, the only Cubs to bag hits were Javier Baez and Ian Happ.
Over on the Reds’ side, they’re relying on lefty Cody Reed for the Tuesday start. In his 12 games and one start last season, Reed managed a 5.09 ERA with 10 earned in 17.2 innings.
The Reds’ Scooter Gennett led the way coming into this series with seven hits, two doubles and one RBI. In the Monday game, Tucker Barnhart put up a nice 3-for-4 outing.
The Cubs are 49-24 in their last 73 Tuesday games and 9-2 in Lester’s last 11 Tuesday starts. Chicago is also 6-2 in Lester’s last eight starts with four days’ rest and 15-7 in his last 22 starts in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Reds are 1-4 in the last five during game two of a series and 0-6 in Reed’s last six starts in game two of a series. Cincinnati is also 0-5 in Reed’s last five home starts and 0-11 in his last 11 starts.
Lester’s first start this year was less than inspiring, and there’s not a lot to go on when it comes to Reed. That said, Reed does seem to have a pretty good arm when he’s on, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come out strong here. I think the payoff in this one is worth taking a chance on the Reds.
