Cincinnati Reds +105 / Chicago Cubs -115 O/U: 9.5
The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds will match up on the MLB diamond to kick off their series Thursday.
The Cubs are coming out of a set versus the Athletics. After splitting the first two games 6-5 (win) and 11-4 (loss), in the Wednesday finale Chicago took a dominant 10-1 win.
The Cubs will go with Cole Hamels in the Thursday game. Across 104.2 innings and a 6-3 mark so far, Hamels has a 2.84 ERA with 103 Ks and 35 walks.
Over on the Reds’ side, they’re fresh off a pair of games versus the Angels. Cincinnati took both installments of that set 7-4 and 8-4, and they’ve won three of their last four games.
For Thursday’s opener, the Reds will be sending out Alex Wood in the start. Across his 11.1 innings and 1-0 mark this year, Wood has a 3.18 ERA with nine Ks and two walks.
The Cubs are 4-1 in their last five versus the NL Central and 53-22 in their last 76 Thursday games. The under is 7-1-1 in Chicago’s last nine in game one of a series and the over is 4-1 in their last five Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Reds are 6-1 in their last seven home games and 4-1 in their last five overall. Cincinnati is 1-7 in the last eight after an off day and the over is 4-1 in their last five home games.
We’ve only got a couple of starts to base Wood from right now, but the early returns have been promising. In his 2019 debut July 28, he put up 4.2 innings with two earned on seven hits, then posted a quality start his last time up August 2 with 6.2 innings and two earned on four hits.
Most of the damage Wood has faced this year came via the home run (three allowed), so if he can keep that in check I like the Reds’ chances here.
