MLB | Detroit Tigers (36-37) at Cincinnati Reds (26-45)
David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

Out at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday, the Detroit Tigers and the Cincinnati Reds will be finishing up their two-game MLB series.

In the Tuesday opener, the Reds scored four runs in the third inning and three in the sixth on the way to a 9-5 win (after a messy ninth inning, that is).

For Wednesday’s game, the Tigers will be bringing out RHP Michael Fulmer. In his 80.2 innings and 3-5 record this year, Fulmer has a 4.13 ERA with 66 Ks and 28 BBs.

Nick Castellanos leads the Tigers in hitting, coming into this set with 89 hits, 36 runs and 41 RBI. On Tuesday, Castellanos came up empty.

Over on the Reds’ side, they’re going with Tyler Mahle on Wednesday. Across 75.0 innings and a 5-6 record this year, Mahle has a 3.96 ERA with 68 Ks and 28 BBs.

Scooter Gennett tops the Reds’ offense with 87 hits, 36 runs, 12 homers and 48 RBI entering this series. On Tuesday, Gennett had two hits.

The Tigers are 10-0 in Fulmer’s last 10 Wednesday starts and 2-6 in his last eight starts. Detroit is also 5-1 in their last six in game two of a series and 2-8 in Fulmer’s last 10 road starts.

Meanwhile, the Reds are 19-40 in their last 59 in game two of a series and 4-0 in Mahle’s last four starts. Cincinnati is also 4-1 in Mahle’s last five starts versus a team with a losing record and 4-0 in his last four starts on grass.

Fulmer has had his share of rough outings this year, but in each of his last two starts he’s gone 7.0 innings with one earned run and five hits. Mahle has been pretty good as well, giving up two earned in 16.1 innings across his last three starts. This is a decent pitching matchup, and should be reasonably close. I’m going to give the Tigers a very slight advantage, but it’s probably not one to mess with.

Pick:
Detroit Tigers +115
