The Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds will meet up on the MLB diamond to kick off their series on Monday.
Milwaukee is coming off a weekend set versus the Pirates. After splitting the first two games 3-2 Friday (loss) and 3-1 Saturday (win), in the Sunday finale the Brewers were able to score the go-ahead run in the eighth and hang on for a 2-1 victory.
For Monday’s game, the Brewers are sending out Adrian Houser in the start. Houser is 2-2 with a 2.94 ERA and 40 strikeouts so far this year.
Over on the Reds’ side, they’re fresh off a series versus the Cubs. Cincinnati also split their first two weekend games with a 6-3 win Friday and a 6-0 loss Saturday. On Sunday the Reds fell 8-6.
Taking the hill for the Reds in the Monday game will be Tyler Mahle. This season so far, Mahle is 2-8 with a 4.35 ERA and 84 strikeouts.
Milwaukee is 19-7 in their last 26 Monday games and 8-3 in their last 11 versus the NL Central. The Brewers are 0-6 in their last six in game one of a series and the under is 14-5 in their last 19 Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Reds are 0-4 in Mahle’s last four starts versus the NL Central and 1-8 in his last nine in game one of a series. Cincinnati is 2-8 in Mahle’s last 10 starts versus a team with a winning record and the over is 3-1-1 in their last five Monday games.
Houser made 14 relief outings this year and was great, but he didn’t do too well in his most recent start, giving up three runs on four hits and three BBs over just a couple of innings.
As for Mahle, he’s been decent but not dominant lately, with just one quality start in his last six tries.
So long as Houser can shake off the nerves and start this game out well, I think the Brewers will be in a good position here.
