MLB | St. Louis Cardinals (80-65) at Cincinnati Reds (68-77)

The Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Wednesday in Cincinnati for game three of their series.

The Cincinnati Reds won’t be going to the post season this year but that didn’t stop them from getting the win over the Cardinals on Tuesday. Devin Mesoraco hit a home run and Chris Heisey and Zack Cozart had two hits each as the Reds scored nine runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Mike Leake allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings to get the win to go to 11-11 for the season and Aroldis Chapman earned his 31st save. For Wednesday’s game the Reds start Alfredo Simon who has lost seven of his last eight decisions. For the season Simon has allowed 159 hits and 67 earned runs while striking out 112 over 171.1 innings for a 13-10 record and a 3.52 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals took the loss on Tuesday in Cincinnati but it didn’t hurt as all of their closest chasers in the NL Central lost as well. Matt Holliday and Matt Adams each had two hits and Jon Jay added a hit as the Cardinals scored five runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Michael Wacha allowed six hits and six runs, five earned, while striking out three over 4.0 innings to take the loss and go to 5-6 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Cardinals start John Lackey who took the loss in his last start. Since bring traded to St. Louis lackey has allowed 54 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 34 over 44.1 innings for a 2-2 record and a 4.87 ERA.

Cincinnati is 8-19 in their last 27 games, 12-30 against a right-handed starter, and 1-9 in Simon’s last 10 starts. St. Louis is 9-2 in their last 11 games, 4-2 in their last six road games, and 4-1 in Lackey’s alst five starts. St. Louis is 6-1 in their last seven meetings with Cincinnati.

I have little faith in either of these pitchers but the Cardinals are the better team right now and my pick here.
