The Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox face off on Friday in Cleveland for game one of their series.
The Cleveland Indians are still alive in their bid to make the post season but they need to win now and they also need some help. The Indians are 40-28 at home, 6-4 in their last 10 games and took a tough extra innings loss on Thursday. As a team the Indians are hitting .255 with Michael Brantley hitting .311, Lonnie Chisenhall hitting .298, and Yan Gomes hitting .291. The Indians pitching staff has an ERA of 3.61 with the starters at 4.00 and the bullpen at 2.92. For game one against the White Sox the Indians start T.J. House who has no decisions in each of his last two starts. For the season House has allowed 91 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 58 over 78 innings for a 2-3 record and a 3.92 ERA.
The Chicago White Sox have fallen off over the second half of the season and have made roster moves to put them in position for next year. The White Sox are 29-40 on the road, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss to Minnesota on Wednesday. As a team the White Sox are hitting .257 with Jose Abreu hitting .322, Adam Eaton hitting .310, and Conor Gillaspie hitting .295. The White Sox pitching staff has an ERA of 4.43 with the starters at 4.46 and the bullpen at 4.37. For game one against the Indians the White Sox start Chris Sale who is having a solid season but who hasn’t gotten a ton of support from the bullpen. For the season Sale has allowed 109 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 178 over 149 innings for an 11-3 record and a 2.11 ERA.
Cleveland is 5-2 in game one of a series, 5-2 against a left-handed starter, and 8-3 in House’s last 11 starts. Chicago is 4-11 in their last 15 games, 6-2 following an off day, and 2-6 in Sale’s last eight road starts against a team with a winning record. Chicago is 9-21 in their last 30 games against Cleveland.
I don’t love this game but I have to go with Chris Sale to pull through in this spot.
