The Cleveland Indians and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Wednesday at Progressive Field for game three of their series.
The Cleveland Indians are hoping to sneak back into the post season race in American League but their hopes took a blow on Tuesday as they lost to the Tigers. Carlos Santana hit a home run, Michael Brantley had two hits, and Yan Gomes had a hit as the Indians scored two runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco allowed 10 hits and a run while striking out 10 over 5.1 innings to not get a decision as Cody Allen took the loss after blowing the save. For Wednesday’s game the Indians start Danny Salazar who won last time out to end a two decision losing streak. For the season Salazar has allowed 82 hits and 37 earned runs while striking out 83 over 78.2 innings for a 5-6 record and a 4.23 ERA.
The Detroit Tigers are looking to get the lead back in the AL Central and they helped their position getting the win on Tuesday. J.D. Martinez had three hits including a home run and Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez had three hits each as the Tigers scored four runs on 15 hits. Starting pitcher Kyle Lobstein allowed five hits and two runs while striking out 10 over 5.1 innings to not get a decision as Phil Coke got the win and Joe Nathan earned his 29th save. For Wednesday’s game the Tigers start Justin Verlander who has won his last two starts. For the season Verlander has allowed 188 hits and 89 earned runs while striking out 132 over 171.1 innings for a 12-11 record and a 4.68 ERA.
Cleveland is 6-2 in their last nine games,. 7-4 against the AL Central, and 5-2 in Salazar’s last seven starts. Detroit is 6-2 in their last eight road games, -10 as an underdog, and 4-10 in Verlander’s last 14 starts as a road underdog. Detroit has won five games in a row in Cleveland.
This hasn’t been a great year for Verlander but I like the Tigers in this spot as Verlander has been improving as of late.
