The Los Angeles Angels and the Cleveland Indians meet in game one of their three game set from Progressive Field in MLB action on Friday.
The Los Angeles Angels will be out to snap a four game losing streak after being swept by Tampa Bay to start their week following a 4-2 loss in the series finale on Thursday. Andrelton Simmons and Jerry Marte accounted for the lone Angels’ runs in the loss, while Justin Upton went 2 for 3 and Albert Pujols went 1 for 4, with each recording a double as the Angels mustered up just three hits as a team in the loss. Andrew Heaney took the loss, falling to 6-7 this season after allowing all four runs on six hits while striking out five over six innings of work. Jaime Barria will start the opener and is 6-7 with a 3.74 ERA and 56 strikeouts this season. This will be Barrio’s first career start against Cleveland.
The Cleveland Indians come into this game rested after winning the rubber match of their series with Minnesota by a final score of 2-0 on Wednesday. Yan Gomes went 1 for 4 with an RBI while Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion each added a double with Ramirez going 2 for 4 at the dish. Rajai Davis, Leonys Martin, Melky Cabrera and Erik Gonzalez each had a base hit as well in the winning effort for the Tribe. Carlos Carrasco got the win to improve to 13-5 this season after tossing 7.1 shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out ten. Brad Hang closed out the 8th and the 9th for his 2nd save in a Cleveland uniform. Mike Clevinger will start game one and is 7-7 with a 3.43 ERA and 133 strikeouts this season. In his career, Clevinger is 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA and 19 strikeouts against the Angels.
Los Angeles is 1-7 in Barrio’s last 8 starts and 3-13 in their last 16 road games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Cleveland is 0-4 in Clevinger’s last 4 starts and 5-2 in their last 7 games overall while the over is 17-4-1 in their last 22 home games against a team with a losing record. Cleveland is 4-0 in Clevinger’s last 4 starts against the Angels.
Cleveland has lost each of Clevinger’s last four starts, and the guy can’t catch a break. When the Tribe scores, Clevinger can’t keep runs off of the board and when he pitches well, the Indians can’t give him any run support. However, I need to see Barria win more than one game before trusting him again as he was going through a brutal stretch where the Angels lost every time that he took the mound it seemed. Clevinger has had success in the past against the Angels and since L.A. is reeling right now, I’ll back Cleveland to add to their woes with a win on Friday.
