Colorado Rockies -105 / Arizona Diamondbacks -115
The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies meet in the opener of a three game NL West division set in MLB action from Coors Field on Monday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to rebound after losing the rubber match of their series with the Dodgers by a final score of 9-3 on Sunday. All of Arizona’s scoring came via the long ball, as Nick Ahmed belted a two run home run while Eduardo Escobar went 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Christian Walker and Adam Jones each went 2 for 4 at the dish while Ketel Marte and Carson Kelly each added base hits to cap off Arizona’s offense as a team in the defeat. Mike Leake took the loss, falling to 9-9 after giving up eight runs on ten hits over five innings of work. Merrill Kelly will start game one and is 7-12 with a 4.52 ERA and 104 strikeouts this season. In his career, Kelly is 0-2 with a 6.39 ERA and 10 strikeouts against Colorado.
The Colorado Rockies will look to pick up some momentum after avoiding the sweep at the hands of San Diego with an 8-3 win in Sunday’s series finale. Yonder Alonso and Ian Desmond each had two RBIs with Alonso belting a home run. Raimel Tapia, Trevor Story, Tony Wolters and German Marquez each had an RBI to finish off Colorado’s scoring as a team in the win with Story adding a double. Charlie Blackmon went 2 for 5 with a double while Ryan McMahon added a two-bagger of his own in the victory for Colorado. Marquez got the win to improve to 11-5 on the year after allowing three runs on five hits while striking out nine over eight innings of work. Peter Lambert will start the opener and is 2-3 with a 6.87 ERA and 41 strikeouts this season. This will be Lambert’s first career start against Arizona.
Arizona is 1-5 in their last 6 road games against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 Monday games. Colorado is 1-8 in Lambert’s last 9 starts, 1-4 in Lambert’s last 5 home starts and 8-26 in their last 34 games overall while the over is 5-2 in Lambert’s last 7 starts against a team with a winning record. Arizona is 3-8 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams and 0-5 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Colorado.
You have a matchup here where the two teams barely win when their respective starter is on the mound, with Kelly having a 5.21 ERA on the road while going winless along with an ERA over six in his two starts against Colorado. On the other hand, Lambert has an ERA well over seven at home, one of many pitchers who has an inflated ERA when pitching at Coors. However, I still like Arizona here despite the D-Backs dropping Kelly’s last seven starts as I feel that Lambert is a rare case where having home field is more of a detriment than it is an advantage. Colorado has also been ice cold for the majority of the second half of the season and have watched their playoff hopes fade while Arizona is only three games out heading into Monday’s action. I’ll take Arizona and the cheap price here..
