The Arizona Diamondbacks have struggled this season at times but they didn’t on Tuesday as they clobbered the Nationals. For Wednesday’s game the Diamondbacks start Jeremy Hellickson who has allowed 45 hits and 21 earned runs while striking out 25 over 32.1 innings for a 1-3 record and a 5.85 ERA.
The Washington Nationals have been one of the hottest teams in baseball but they were cooled off on Tuesday getting smoked in Arizona. Bryce harper hit a home run and Ryan Zimmerman and Denard Span each had two hits as the Diamondbacks scored six runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg allowed eight hits and eight runs, seven earned, while striking out three over 3.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-4 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Nationals start Gio Gonzalez who has allowed 40 hits and 15 earned runs while striking out 39 over 37.1 innings for a 3-2 record and a 3.62 ERA.
Arizona is 19-43 in their last 62 games as an underdog, 18-35 against the NL East, and 1-5 in Hellickson’s last six starts. Washington is 5-1 in their last six games, 6-2 in their last eight road games, and 4-1 in Gonzalez’s last five starts. Washington is 6-1 in their last seven games against Arizona.
The Nationals got rolled on Tuesday but look for them to bounce back here and hit Hellickson hard for an easy win.
