The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres face off on Saturday for game three of their MLB series of NL west teams.
The Arizona Diamondbacks battled back on Friday but in the end they came up short falling to the Padres. A.J. Pollock, Paul Goldschmidt, David Peralta, and Chris Owings all hit home runs as the Diamondbacks scored five runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out three over 4.2 innings to not get a decision as Enrique Burgos took the loss. For Saturday’s game the Diamondbacks start Chase Anderson who has allowed 26 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out 27 over 29.1 innings for a 0-1 record and a 3.38 ERA.
The San Diego Padres blew a big lead on Friday but they managed to rally and get the win. Wil Myers had four hits including a home run, Will Venable had three hits including a home run, and Matt Kemp was among those getting a hit as the Padres scored six runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher James Shields allowed six hits and five runs while striking out seven over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 4-0 for the season and Craig Kimbrel earned his ninth save. For Saturday’s game the Padres start Tyson Ross who has allowed 34 hits and 16 earned runs while striking out 42 over 34.2 innings for a 1-3 record and a 4.15 ERA.
Arizona is 17-42 as an underdog, 6-21 in game three of a series, and 2-8 in Anderson’s last 10 games as an underdog. San Diego is 7-18 as a road favorite, 6-2 in game three of a series, and 3-10 in Ross’ last 13 starts against the AL West. San Diego is 3-6 in their last nine games in Arizona.
I don’t love this game but getting the home team as a dog in coin flip games is usually the better play and my play here.
