The Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros will match up in MLB action on Monday as they kick off their series.

The Cubs just finished up a weekend set versus the Reds. Chicago fell in the first game of that set 6-5, then took a win Saturday 8-6. In the Sunday game, the Cubs dropped 10-2, giving up a whopping 17 hits.

For Monday’s start, Chicago will be going with Cole Hamels. Across his 58.2 innings and 4-0 mark this year, Hamels has a 3.38 ERA with 60 Ks and 22 BBs.

Over on the Astros’ side, they’re coming off a series against Boston. In the Friday game of that set, Houston eked out a 4-3 win, then did it again on Saturday 4-3. In the Sunday finale, the Astros dropped 4-1.

For the Monday game, Houston will be sending out Gerrit Cole for the start. In his 65.2 innings and 4-5 record so far, Cole has a 4.11 ERA with 100 Ks and 17 BBs.

The Cubs are 2-5 in their last seven Monday games and 4-0 in Hamels’ last four road starts. Chicago is 8-1 in Hamels’ last nine starts and 6-0 in his last six versus a team with a winning record.

Meanwhile, the Astros are 7-2 in their last nine Monday games and 40-16 in their last 56 in game one of a series. Houston is 4-1 in Cole’s last five starts and 16-5 in his last 21 home starts.

Hamels has been solid basically this whole year, and he hasn’t given up more than three earned in a start. That said, Hamels has recorded just one win in his last six outings.

As for Cole, he got beat up by the White Sox his last time up with six earned on seven hits in 5.0 innings. Cole has a few ugly games here and there but for the most part he’s been solid as well.

This is a good opening matchup and I think it’s going to come down to offense. I’m going Houston for the home win in this battle of pitchers named Cole, but it could be a close one.
