Houston Astros -156 / New York Yankees +135
The New York Yankees and the Houston Astros meet in game one of a three game MLB set from Minute Maid Park on Monday night.
The New York Yankees will look to build on a three game road sweep of the Baltimore Orioles, including a 15-3 rout of the O’s in Sunday’s finale. A lot of New York’s offense came via the home run, as Gary Sanchez went 3 for 6 with a trio of home runs and six RBIs while Clint Frazier went 4 for 5 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs. Austin Romine had a home run with two RBIs while Gleyber Torres went 2 for 5 with a double and a solo homer. DJ LeMahieu and Gio Urshela each added a double and an RBI while Brett Gardner had a two-bagger of his own and Luke Voit also chipped in a base hit in the rout. Domingo German got the win to improve to 2-0 after allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three over six innings of work. Masahiro Tanaka will start game one and is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA and 12 strikeouts this season. In his career, Tanaka is 0-2 with an 8.87 ERA and 21 strikeouts against Houston.
The Houston Astros will also look to keep their momentum going after sweeping the Oakland A’s over the weekend, including a 9-8 triumph in the series finale on Sunday. Aledmys Diaz led the Astros by going 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs while Tony Kemp went 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Alex Bregman went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley and Carlos Correa all put runs on the board as well in the winning effort. George Springer also chipped in a double in his 6 ABs in the victory. Brad Peacock went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, not factoring in the decision. Roberto Osuna picked up the win to improve to 1-0 this season. Justin Verlander will start game one and is 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. In his career, Verlander is 7-7 with a 3.49 ERA and 120 strikeouts against the Yankees.
New York is 11-5 in Tanaka’s last 16 road starts and 4-0 in their last 4 road games while the over is 14-6 in their last 20 games overall. Houston is 8-2 in Verlander’s last 10 starts and 15-6 in their last 21 home games while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record. New York is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
The Yankees and the plus money is tempting considering how well the Yankees played against Baltimore and how Verlander looked mortal in his last start, surrendering four runs over four innings. However, in his career, Tanaka is giving up almost a run per inning against Houston, giving up 23 earned in 23.1 career innings against Houston. The Astros are lighting up the scoreboard in their own right and I think Verlander is due for a better start here, so I’ll lay the juice with the Astros to keep their winning ways going at home.
