The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Houston Astros will match up on the MLB diamond Thursday to finish up their series.
In the Tuesday opener, the Astros managed a 5-1 victory. On Wednesday, Pittsburgh broke through for a high-flying 14-2 victory.
For the Thursday game, the Pirates are sending out Joe Musgrove to start. Across his 84.2 innings and 5-7 mark this year, Musgrove has a 4.57 ERA with 69 Ks and 22 BBs.
Pittsburgh put up 15 hits in the big win on Wednesday. Kevin Newman and Corey Dickerson combined for a whopping eight hits, six RBI and four runs for the Pirates in that one.
Over on the Astros’ side, they’re going with Brad Peacock in the start Thursday. Over his 82.0 innings and 6-5 mark this year, Peacock has a 3.62 ERA with 87 Ks and 24 BBs.
Houston managed nine hits in the Wednesday loss, but couldn’t translate much to the scoreboard. George Springer had a nice night though, with three hits and a solo homer.
The Pirates are 3-10 in their last 13 Thursday games and 3-10 in Musgrove’s last 13 road starts. Pitt is 1-5 in Musgrove’s last six starts with five days’ rest and 0-5 in his last five Thursday starts.
Meanwhile, the Astros are 3-8 in their last 11 Thursday games and 2-8 in their last 10 in game three of a series. Houston is 5-1 in Peacock’s last six home starts and 6-2 in his last eight Thursday starts.
After an implosion in Atlanta (4.0 innings; nine hits; six earned), Musgrove came back with five hits, one earned and no walks in 7.0 innings his last time up for his fifth win of the year.
As for Peacock, he had two starts with eight earned in 11.1 innings but improved on that in New York in his last start with two earned in 6.0 innings—but still lost, and is 1-3 in his last four starts.
I think Peacock’s fortunes will be better here, so I’m going Astros.
