The Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros meet in game one of a three game AL West division set in MLB action from Minute Maid Park on Tuesday night.
The Texas Rangers will look to rebound after being swept by the Oakland A’s over the weekend, including a 6-1 loss in Sunday’s series finale. Shin-Soo Choo went 3 for 3 at the dish while Jose Trevino had a double and Elvis Andrus added a base hit as the Rangers cranked out just five hits as a team in the losing effort. Jonathan Hernandez took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year after allowing three runs on two hits while striking out four over 2.2 innings of work. Lance Lynn will start game one and is 14-10 with a 3.72 ERA and 216 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lynn is 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA and 72 strikeouts against Houston.
The Houston Astros will look to lock up the division after sweeping the Royals over the weekend, taking Sunday’s series finale by a final score of 12-3. Josh Reddick and Abraham Toro each had three RBIs with Reddick going a perfect 5 of 5 at the dish with a home run while Toro went 2 for 5 with a double. Kyle Tucker had a home run and two RBIs while Michael Brantley, Yuli Gurriel, Myles Straw and Aledmys Diaz each had an RBI to cap off Houston’s scoring in the win with Gurriel hitting a homer and Straw belting a triple. Alex Bregman added a double while Martin Maldonado had a base hit to finish off Houston’s offense in defeat. Wade Miley got the win to improve to 14-5 after allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four over six innings of work. Justin Verlander will start game one and is 18-6 with a 2.58 ERA and 275 strikeouts this season. In his career, Verlander is 17-8 with a 2.80 ERA and 205 strikeouts against Texas.
Texas is 0-7 in Lynn’s last 7 starts and 0-4 in Lynn’s last 4 road starts while the under is 27-12-2 in their last 41 road games. Houston is 27-9 in Verlander’s last 36 division starts and 48-17 in their last 65 home games while the under is 12-3-1 in Verlander’s last 16 home starts. Houston is 4-0 in Verlander’s last 4 starts against Texas while Texas is 0-5 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 0-7 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Houston.
I understand the allure of heavy plus money with Texas as Lynn’s been one of their better pitchers this season. However, Lynn’s struggled on the road, and hasn’t had a ton of luck against the Astros this season, posting a 4.50 ERA in 14 innings at Minute Maid Park this year. Verlander took the loss in his last start, but he still threw well and has been on more often than not this season. I’ll side with Houston for the series-opening win and to get rid of some of the juice, I’ll back Houston on the RL.
