MLB | Boston Red Sox (63-83) at Kansas City Royals (80-64)

The Kansas City Royals and the Boston Red Sox face off on Thursday at Kauffman Stadium for game one of their series.

The Kansas City Royals lead the AL Central after beating the Tigers on Wednesday Night in Detroit. The Royals are 38-32 at home, 6-4  in their last 10 games, and their lead in the American League Central is one game. As a team the Royals are hitting .261 with Alcides Escobar hitting .276, Alex Gordon hitting .272, and Billy Butler hitting .268. The Kansas City pitching staff has an ERA of 3.52 with the starters at 3.58 and the bullpen at 3.40, For game one against the Red Sox the Royals start Liam Hendriks who makes his second start as a member of the Royals. In his two appearances for K.C. Hendriks has allowed 11 hits and four earned runs while striking out eight over 11 innings for a 0-1 record and a 3.27 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox are having a season to forget as they trail in the AL East. The Red Sox are 32-39 on the road, 3-7 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last four games. As a team Boston is hitting .244 with Brock Holt hitting .281, Dustin Pedroia hitting .278, and David Ortiz hitting .261. The Red Sox pitching staff has an ERA of 4.01 with the starters at 4.36 and the bullpen at 3.31. For game one in Kansas City the Red Sox start Clay Buchholz who has won his last two starts. For the season Buchholz has allowed 157 hits and 86 earned runs while striking out 112 over 146.1 innings for a 7-8 record and a 5.29 ERA.

Kansas City is 10-3 in game one of a series, 22-7 as a favorite, and 32-14 in their last 46 games. Boston is 1-6 as an underdog, 4-1 in game one of a series, and 2-5 in Buchholz’s last seven starts against a team with a winning record. Boston has won four of their last five meetings with Kansas City.

I have little faith in Hendriks but the Royals are far and away the better team and at home even with Hendriks the better option.
