The Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Royals will meet up on the MLB diamond to kick off their series on Thursday.
Cleveland just finished up against the Blue Jays. The Indians split the first two in that set 7-3 (win) and 2-1 (loss). In the Wednesday game Cleveland bagged a 4-0 victory.
For The Thursday opener, Adam Plutko will take the mound for Cleveland. Across his 48.2 innings and 3-2 mark so far, Plutko has a 4.81 ERA with 31 Ks and six walks.
Over on the Kansas City side, they just played a pair against the Braves. The Royals eked out a 5-4 win in the Tuesday game, then on Wednesday KC took a 2-0 victory.
Kansas City will go with Mike Montgomery in the start Thursday. Over 29.0 innings and a 1-3 mark so far, Montgomery has a 6.83 ERA with 19 Ks and 13 BBs.
The Indians are 5-1 in the last six in game one of a series and 53-24 in their last 77 Thursday games. Cleveland is 5-1 in Plutko’s last six starts and 5-1 in his last six versus a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 4-1 in their last five in game one of a series and 5-2 in their last seven versus the AL Central. The over is 3-1-1 in Kansas City’s last five Thursday games as well.
Plutko had a couple of rough appearances going this month (10 earned in a span of 10.0 innings) but posted a quality start his last time up with one earned on two hits in 7.0 innings—he still lost, though.
As for Montgomery, his first start with the Indians didn't’ go so well (five earned, six hits, 2.0 innings); it’ll take a little while before we figure out how he’s going to fit in.
I’m leaning toward the Indians and Plutko here, but there are a lot of variables.
