The Line: Kansas City Royals -118 / Detroit Tigers +108 --- Over/Under: 8
The Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers face off on Friday at Kauffman Stadium for game one of their monster series that should go a long way in deciding the AL Central.
The Kansas City Royals have had the lead in the AL Central this season but most of the year they have been looking up at the Tigers. Currently the Royals are just a half of a game back in the Central standings and they also have the second Wildcard in the American League. K.C. is five games over .500 at home this year and they have lost three of their last four against the Tigers in Kansas City. Lorenzo Cain is hiting .298 with no Royals regulars hitting over .300with Norichika Aoki hitting .281 and Eric Hosmer hitting .266. but their team batting average of .261 ranks sixth in the Majors. For this monster game the Royals give the ball to Jason Vargas and while he pitched well early he has lost four of his last five starts including a los at Detroit. Vargas is 11-9 for the season and 1-2 in his last three games with his ERA for the season at 3.41 but moving up to 4.67 over his last three starts.
The Detroit Tigers have been regulars in the post season and while they have the half of a game lead in the AL Central, they haven’t clinched even a spot in the post season as of yet. The Tigers are eight games over .500 on the road and have played well in Detroit. The Tigers are the top hitting team in baseball with a team batting average of .278 with Victor Martinez leading Detroit with a .333 batting average and Miguel Cabrera hitting .318. Justin Verlander gets the ball for the Tigers in game one and he has won three of his last four decisions but he looks far from the pitcher we have seen in the past. Verlander is 13-12 for the season with a 4.81 ERA and he is 1-1 with a 6.05 ERA over his last three stats.
Kansas City is 4-0 following an off day, 0-5 following a win, and 1-4 in Vargas’ last five starts. Detroit is 6-1 in game one of a series, 7-3 in their last 10 games, and 4-1 in Verlander’s last five starts. Detroit has won six of their last eight games against Kansas City.
The Royals have struggled with the Tigers at home and neither pitcher appears to be on top of their game but with it being a playoff type atmosphere it is a lean to the home team.
