The Kansas City Royals and the Oakland A’s face off on Thursday at Kauffman Stadium as they close out their series.
The Kansas City Royals bounced back from Tuesday’s streak snapping loss by beating the A’s on Wednesday. Omar Infante had two hits including a home run, Norichika Aoki had two hits, and Billy Butler had a hit as the Royals scored three runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Jason Vargas had his best stuff working allowing three hits and striking out four over 9.0 innings to get the win to raise his record to 9-5 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Royals start James Shields who has won his last two starts. For the season Shields has allowed 167 hits and 60 earned runs while striking out 132 over 166.1 innings for an 11-6 record and a 3.25 ERA.
The Oakland A’s have been sharp all season but on Wednesday they had no answers as they fell to the Royals. Josh Donaldson, Jonny Gomes, and Jed Lowrie each had hits as the A’s were shut out on three hits. Starting pitcher Scott Kazmir allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out three over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 13-5 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Athletics start Jeff Samardzija who is coming off of a win in his last start. Since being traded to Oakland Samdzija has allowed 38 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 35 over 49.2 innings for a 3-1 record and a 3.08 ERA.
Kansas City is 701 in their last eight home games, 17-5 in their last 22 games, and 1-4 in Shields’ last five home starts. Oakland is 13-6 against a right-handed starter, 7-19 as an underdog, and 5-0 in Samrdzija’s last five starts. Oakland is 41-20 in their last 61 games in Kansas City.
The Royals are just hot and the have the best of it here in Shields as well making them the choice.
