The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals square off in game two of their three game interleague set from Kauffman Stadium in MLB action on Saturday.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to keep their momentum going after winning three straight and seven of their last nine games following a 7-0 shutout win in game one on Friday. Matt Carpenter, Jose Martinez and Harrison Bader each had two RBIs, with Carpenter and Bader hitting a home run while Martinez went 3 for 4 with a double. Paul DeJong added a solo home run to round out the scoring for the Cardinals in the win. Yadier Molina belted a pair of doubles while Francisco Pena, Jedd Gyorko and Adolis Garcia each contributed base hits to round out St. Louis’ offense in the win. Austin Gomber got the win to climb to 2-0 this season after allowing just four hits over five shutout innings, Daniel Poncedeleon closed out the final three innings for his 1st career save. Jack Flaherty will start game two and is 5-6 with a 3.27 ERA and 118 strikeouts this season. This will be Flaherty’s first career start against Kansas City.
The Kansas City Royals will look to bounce back after making it seven losses in their last eight games following the loss on Friday. Lucas Duda and Brett Phillips each had two hits while Adalberto Mondesi added a triple, Jorge Bonifacio added a double and Salvador Perez added a base hit to cap off Kansas City’s offense in the losing effort. Burch Smith took the loss to fall to 1-4 this season after allowing five runs on six hits over just 1.2 innings of work. Danny Duffy will start game two and is 7-10 with a 4.70 ERA and 126 strikeouts this season. In his career, Duffy is 2-0 with a 2.04 ERA and 22 strikeouts against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 3-7 in Flaherty’s last 10 road starts and 7-2 in their last 9 games overall while the under is 3-0-1 in their last 4 road games. Kansas City is 2-8 in Duffy’s last 10 home starts and 5-23 in their last 28 home games against a team with a winning record while the under is 18-6-2 in their last 26 games against the NL Central. St. Louis is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams and 29-11 in the last 40 meetings between these two teams in Kansas City.
You’d think that if Kansas City were going to steal a game this would be it as Flaherty has been hittable and Duffy has probably been Kansas City’s best starter this season. However, Duffy is coming off a start where he allowed six runs in six innings and has allowed six or more runs in two of his last three starts. Not to mention in Kansas City’s last three losses they’ve score a combined total of one run. You’re not going to win many baseball games when you don’t score last time I checked. St. Louis is simply the better team here so I’ll lay the juice with the Cardinals on the road in this one.
