The Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers face off on Monday at Kauffman Stadium for game one of their series.
The Kansas City Royals are right in the thick of he post season race on the American League but they are far from a lock to make the playoffs in any capacity. The Royals are 35-32 at home, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they have lost three games in a row. As a team the Royals are hitting .263 with Alcides Escobar hitting .278, Alex Gordon hitting .277, and Billy Butler hitting .275. The Royals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.60 with the starters at 3.63 and the bullpen at 3.51. For game one against the Rangers the Royals start Yordano Ventura who has won three of his last four decisions. For the season Ventura has allowed 137 hits and 55 earned runs while striking out 125 over 145.2 innings for a 10-9 record and a 3.40 ERA.
The Texas Rangers have the worst record in baseball but they hope to at least finish strong in what has been a season lost to major injuries. The Rangers are 29-43 on the road, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last two games. As a team the Rangers are hitting .255 with Adrian Beltre hitting .324, Alex Rios hitting .280, and Leonys Martin hitting .273. The Rangers pitching staff has an ERA of 4.71 with the starters at 5.04 and the bullpen at 4.12. For game one against the Royals the Rangers start Colby Lewis who won last time out to end a personal three game losing streak. For the season Lew is has allowed 177 hits and 83 earned runs while striking out 112 over 137.1 innings for a 9-11 record and a 5.44 ERA.
Kansas City is 4-1 against the AL West, 10-5 as a home favorite, and 5-1 in Ventura’s last six starts. Texas is 9-19 as a road underdog, 18-47 in their last 65 games, and 8-3 in Lewis’ last 11 road starts. Texas is 1-4 in Lewis last five starts against Kansas City.
I don’t like the way the Royals are playing so laying these odds on them is tough but I will take them for a free pick in a game I might pass on.
