The Los Angeles Angels and the Boston Red Sox face off on Sunday as they close out their series in Anaheim.
The Los Angeles Angels looked to be close to a loss on Saturday but they bounced back and beat the Red Sox in extra innings. Mike Trout had three hits including a home run, Albert Pujols had two hit including a homer, and Kole Calhoun, Erick Aybar, and Howie Kendrick each had two hits as the Angels acored five runs on 15 hits. Starting pitcher Garrettt Richards allowed three hits and three runs while striking out five over 6.1 innings but it was Matt Shoemaker who got the win to go to 10-4 for the season.For Sunday’s game the Angels start hector Santiago who has won his last three decisions. For the season Santiago has allowed 74 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 73 over 84.1 innings for a 3-7 record and a 3.84 ERA.
The Boston Red Sox rallied twice on Saturday to get the lead but they couldn’t make either of them hold up as they fell to the Angels. Dustin Pedroia had two hits and David Ortiz and Yoenis Cespedes each had hit as the Red Sox scored four runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz allowed six hits and three runs while striking out eight over 8.0 innings but didn’t get a decision as Junichi Tazawa blew the save and Brandon Workman took the loss to fall to 1-5 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Red Sox start Rubby De La Rosa who has two losses and a no decision in his last three starts. For the season De La Rosa has allowed 60 hits and 23 earned runs while striking out 40 over 60.1 innings for a 3-4 record and a 3.43 ERA.
Los Angeles is 8-1 in game three of a series, 37-16 in their last 53 home games and 1-4 in their last five games. Boston is 3-8 in their last 11 road games, 4-13 in their last 17 games and 1-6 in De La Rosa’s last seven starts as an underdog. Boston is 2-6 in their last eight games in Los Angeles.
The Angels haven’t ben at their best recently but where they are should be good enough here because they are just the better team it is a long way from home for Boston.
